How to Rig Shade if You Break Down in Extreme Heat
By The Standard Carry Co Field Team ยท Last updated June 2026
This is general safety information, not medical advice. In a heat emergency, call 911. Shade and water help you wait more safely; they do not replace air conditioning or medical care.
If you are stranded in extreme heat with no natural shade, you can make your own using a reflective shade tarp and the car as an anchor. The goal is a cooler place to wait that is out of the baking cabin and out of direct sun, while you call for help and stay hydrated. Here is how.
Before you rig anything
- Call for help (911 if anyone is in distress, or roadside assistance) and share your location early.
- Get out of direct sun and the closed cabin if it is safe and away from traffic. A parked car bakes well above the outside temperature.
- Make yourself visible: hazards on, set a marker or triangle, wear a high-visibility vest.
Rig the shade
- Pick the sunny side. You want the shade between the sun and where you will sit, usually the side of the car the sun is hitting.
- Anchor one edge to the car. Tie or clamp the top edge to a roof rack, close it in a door or window, or loop cordage over the mirror so one side is held high.
- Stake or weight the far edge out and down to make an angled roof. Use small stakes, rocks, a wheel, or sealed water pouches as weights. Reflective side faces the sun.
- Add the windshield shade inside the glass to cut cabin heat, and keep a door cracked for airflow if you step away briefly (never leave kids or pets inside).
- Sit in the shade, low to the ground, which is often cooler, and sip water steadily.
Stay ahead of heat illness
Watch everyone for heat exhaustion (heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea, weakness) and treat heat stroke (hot skin, confusion, fast pulse, sweating may stop) as a 911 emergency: cool the person fast and do not force fluids on someone who is confused. See what to do if you are stranded in a hot car.
What makes this easy to do
Rigging shade fast depends on having the right tarp and cordage on hand, not a flimsy blanket that tears in the wind. A grommeted reflective shade tarp, water you can also use as a weight, and a windshield shade are exactly the heat-stable pieces that should live in your trunk. FAQ
How do you make shade if you break down in extreme heat?
Use a reflective shade tarp or emergency bivy and the car itself as an anchor. Tie or weight one edge to the vehicle (roof rack, closed door, mirror) and stake or weight the other edge out and up to make an angled roof, with the reflective side facing the sun. A windshield shade plus shade on the sunny side of the car buys you a cooler place to wait. Stay out of the closed cabin, which bakes.
Is it better to stay in the car or make shade outside?
A closed, un-air-conditioned car heats well above the outside air, so if it is safe to get out and into rigged or natural shade away from traffic, that is usually cooler than sitting in the cabin. Keep the car in view for responders and keep children and pets with you.
What do you need to rig roadside shade?
A reflective shade tarp or mylar emergency blanket, some cordage or bungees, and a few anchor or weight points. The vehicle provides structure; small stakes, rocks, or filled water pouches can weight the far edge.
Does a space blanket work for shade?
A reflective emergency blanket helps as a sun shade with the reflective side out, but thin mylar tears easily and flaps in wind. A grommeted reflective shade tarp is sturdier and easier to rig and re-use.
